being a girl sux...

I hate having cramps. It is literally THE DUMBEST thing in the world.

I'm up @ 4:40 in the morning and can't sleep b/c my stomach hurts. This is only about 1/10 of what it would actually feel like to go into labor- this is freaking bananas! The 1st instance that I am having a contraction, I shall insist that the doctor drug me up immediately!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't want to feel anything from my eyelids down.

Vegas BABY!!!

Soooo.... I'm in Vegas for a couple of days and I am excited to be here for a few reasons!

#1- It was #74 on my Day Zero list and I finally get to cross it off! I'm a Vegas-virgin and very excited to finally be in this city!

#2- I'm here for the APCA (Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities) Advisor's Institute and that makes me super hap-a-lappy b/c it means that I am once again working in collegiate student affairs. And, I'm going to get some awesome advisor's training for the new year. I LOVE going to conferences! If there was a job that just attended conferences- I'd be the CEO.

#3- It's a BEAUTIFUL city and I definitely want to come back (not for a conference) so that I can really get some time out on the street. I just asked Joe if we could come back for our honeymoon but he turned that down.

But... despite all that- traveling alone sucks! Well, I'm not exactly alone, I'm here w/2 other colleagues but since I'm not w/Joe, I might as well be alone. He was so cute today dropping me off at the airport.

Regarding packing- I did well! I actually did a damn good job! Although traveling w/carryons only seems like a good idea- it's not! I'd almost rather check a freaking bag b/c I had a carryon suitcase, a backpack and my freaking purse. I eventually put my purse in my backpack but then when I needed to buy stuff, I had to fish my wallet out of my purse out of my backpack!.... too much.

I was dropped off about 2 hours early and thank the Lord b/c it took me so long to get situated (ALONE) that by the time I finally got settled, it was time to get on the plane.

When I got on the plane, I just grabbed the first empty seat. Is is really worth walking all the way to the back of the plane? Nope. Well, in this case- I probably should have. When I sat down (aisle seat) there were already 2 ladies in my row. I certainly wasn't paying attention when I picked the damn seat, but when I looked over-----

The lady sitting next to me had a freaking trashbag filled w/ice and she was holding it ON HER FACE. She was holding it with her right hand and her left arm was propping up her right arm. I looked down at her hand and EVERY finger on her left hand was cut up AND BLEEDING. WHAT THE HELL!!!! The lady next to the window opened a gar of Vick's Vapor Rub, slopped it out and started rubbing it on the bleeding lady's face--------------- AND ALL OF THIS HAPPENED BEFORE THE REST OF THE PASSENGERS BOARDED THE PLANE!!!

Needless to say, I got a freaking cramp in my back b/c I spent the entire 3 hour and 30 minute flight w/the top half of my body leaning down the center aisle! It was waaay to late to change seats but I was definitely freaked the hell out!

It was gross.... really, really gross.

If Joe and I were traveling together- he would have taken one for the wife team and either (a) traded seats w/me or (b) made us trade planes.

Anyway, I'm done at 4:30 each day so there is some time to get out and hopefully tour the city a little. I'm going to dinner tomorrow night w/a friend from high school and looking forward to good conversation. On Tuesday night one of the my colleagues is going to see if she can get us tickets to a show, so that sounds promising.

Where all free stuff at?! Aside from dinner tomorrow night, I'm trying not to spend my own money. This trip is paid for in full and I don't need to contribute from the Flenoy-Driver bank account.

Aight, well.... my body is still on Texas time and although it's only 9:40 in Vegas- it's 11:40 in my head, stomach and butt.

G'nite Vegas... see you in the morning! (which is gonna suck b/c I haven't had to set an alarm in almost three weeks so this should be very, very interesting!)

flirting w/a tip...

Disclaimer: No matter what I say, I'm going to sound like a jerk.

I don't tip...
the valet
the carhop at sonic
the hotel staff (room service, front desk, etc.)
a taxi/limo driver
a shuttle driver at airport
my hairstylist (b/c Visible Changes is already too damn expensive and I can't afford to tip!)

Sometimes I tip...
the pizza delivery guy
the waitstaff at a buffet
the bartender
the nail tech at a salon
my dealer at a Casino

I always tip...
the waitstaff  (unless it's at a buffet...)

The other day at Lupe Tortillas, my tab was $9 so I handed him a twenty dollar bill. He double checked my receipt and then had the nerve to ask me if I wanted change. The better question should have been, "Do you think you did enough for an $11 tip?!" Had I left him the 'change' it would have been $2 more than my actual bill... and that's just ridiculous.

Look, I get that people in hospitality add value to the over all experience but tipping is a courtesy. Meaning, if I'm feeling courteous, I'll tip. EXCEPT w/restaurant waitstaff. I ALWAYS tip the waitstaff! I'm so confused about whether or not to tip the waitstaff at a buffet b/c sometimes, aside from bringing a drink and clearing plates- they really don't do much! In college, my roommate worked at Golden Corral and made so much money in tips that she could make rent in about 3 days. It always confused the heck out of me b/c Golden Corral is self serve.

During the holidays, the paperguy at my parents house left a white envelope w/their paper. Why should the paperguy be tipped? Is he knocking on the door and placing the newspaper in their hand w/a fresh cup of coffee? He's doing his job... and nothing more. Yes, that makes me sound like a jerk but c'mon... he's not doing anything "tip worthy" he's JUST delivering the paper. Which he is receiving a paycheck to do!

Life would be sooo much simpler if regardless of the job, you never made less than minimum wage. But but but, I have to admit that I do understand the concept of people in the service industry receiving a little extra for a job well done. I've never had to work for tips so maybe I really just don't understand at all....

Joe and I went to dinner for my birthday and BOTH the food and service were AWFUL! However, the manager made an effort to come to our table twice. The 1st time she ordered Joe a fresh plate b/c his food came out cold and the 2nd time was to tell us that she'd chosen a very special $5 dessert for my birthday. Typically, the birthday dessert is an icecream sundae however for the trouble, she chose a HUGE piece of chocolate cake w/2 scoops of icecream. She also made a point to let us know that it was a "nice dessert" that she'd comped for us. After she left, our waitress came over and said, "See, now doesn't that make it all worth while?"

I wanted to punch her in the face.

I always tip the minimum and had every intention to do the same for her... but b/c I was practically backed into a corner to tip more b/c of all the extra comments, fresh plate AND the dessert; we had to tip more than we wanted!!!!

Who wants to be the jerk that didn't tip more than the minimum w/all the 'special treatment'????......

At one point, the waitress came over and said "How old are you turning today? Twenty-two?" C'MON MAN! I ain't seen 22 in a good 7 years and CLEARLY I don't look 22 but she was flirting for a tip!

All this to say: Tipping is a courtesy and one should never just assume that they 'deserve' a tip regardless of the quality of service provided. I think that's my real issue.... assuming that you can (a) give crappy service or (b) 'flirt' your way to a better tip.

I'm going to start a new practice. Every time I go to dinner and the waitstaff comes for my drink order, I'm going to put 20 one dollar bills on the table and say... "Right now, you're starting w/a $20 tip. Every time you mess up, I'm taking away $5."

...we'll see how that goes. Twenty-11 sounds like a year of adventure!

I forgot to mention that after she complimented my age, she had the nerve to say, "How old do I look?!"

LAWD knows she was way older than the 26 I bolted out but I do not do well under pressure!

"Nope... I'm 36!" she said.

"36?" I thought... "Damn, you look 66."
